Semiotics - The study of signs & symbols and their use of interpretation.
Throughout Stranger Things, especially in the first 10-15 minutes, we as an audience rely on semiotics to understand what kind people the characters are and what kind of environment they exist in.
These semiotics can include the lighting of the scene, miseducating en scene such as outfits and objects around an actor and body language.
