Website comparisons - The Guardian vs The Daily Mail

The Daily Mail  - when visiting the home page of the Daily Mail, the breaking news headline takes up the entire width of the page, although leaving room for multiple ads. This headline will obviously attract the most attention as it takes up the most room compared to other stories on the page, and it is the first story a reader will see. This is typical of the daily mail as, similar to their newspaper front pages; the headline covers almost all the page.

The Guardian – The Guardian takes a much more subtle approach at presenting the same breaking news, as the story does not take up as much room as it does on the daily mail website. It allows other stories and information like the weather to be put alongside this story, as the guardian is an informative newspaper. The main headline still takes up the most room and is shown in a different colour to the other stories so it can gain attention, similar to their front-page headlines.
Compared to the daily mail, the guardian’s online editions feature less ads and position them much more out of the way. This is most likely because the daily mail as a much larger audience and needs more funding to keep the whole audience happy.
