Stranger things - Semiotics

Semiotics - The study of signs & symbols and their use of interpretation. Throughout Stranger Things, especially in the first 10-15 minutes, we as an audience rely on semiotics to understand what kind people the characters are and what kind of environment they exist in. These semiotics can include the lighting of the scene, miseducating en scene such as outfits and objects around an actor and body language.

How did Disney successfully use cross-media promotion as part of The Jungle Book’s marketing campaign? The Jungle Books’s marketing campaign used cross media promotion through the use of social media. The use of facebook, instagram and twitter accounts allowed for a larger audience to be educated on the films existence and get the audience involved. They had a snapchat filter available to all snapchat users that allowed the user to look and sound like Scarlett Johansen’s character Kaa, a great way to get a range of aged audiences interested in the film. Evaluating a Frame

Framing matches very well to the original video. The corner is almost central to the frame. One model is positioned above the others, to the right, similar to the original. Could have used a longer shot. The professional shoot has placed their models in the centre of the frame so that more focus can be put on them, so less is on their surroundings. Relied on ambient lighting. Different to original, a lot brighter. Not too harsh however. The professional shoot would have used their lighting in a more focused way, in which it highlights the models and darkens their surroundings. The use of the fairy lights above the models can give the illusion that the light is ambient. Models could have similar outfits, like in the original, as well as sunglasses. Could have a model standing over instead of sitting on the table. Could also push them closer together. Camera The overall focus throughout the video is on the clothes and their fabrics, whether they are being worn or recycled. The camerawork uses a number of varied methods to help the audience focus on the clothes throughout. By using long shots to show a full outfit or a close us to emphasise the fabric or it tearing. The focus on the clothes tearing and being mangled can give off a rough feel; H&M manages to emphasise this through their use of a hand held camera. This constant unsteadiness allows for a less neat feel, which is what the ad tries to convey at the start with the damaging of clothes.  Sound  The ad consists of a number of diegetic and non-diegetic pieces of sound. The non diegetic sound features a soundtrack and a voiceover in the form of a narrative.
