Stranger things - Semiotics

Semiotics - The study of signs & symbols and their use of interpretation. Throughout Stranger Things, especially in the first 10-15 minutes, we as an audience rely on semiotics to understand what kind people the characters are and what kind of environment they exist in. These semiotics can include the lighting of the scene, miseducating en scene such as outfits and objects around an actor and body language.

JUNGLE BOOK QUESTIONS

How did Disney successfully use cross-media promotion as part of The Jungle Book’s marketing campaign? The Jungle Books’s marketing campaign used cross media promotion through the use of social media. The use of facebook, instagram and twitter accounts allowed for a larger audience to be educated on the films existence and get the audience involved. They had a snapchat filter available to all snapchat users that allowed the user to look and sound like Scarlett Johansen’s character Kaa, a great way to get a range of aged audiences interested in the film. The film branched out to merchandise, collaborating with Kenzo, they released jungle book style clothing. 2) To what extent were digital marketing techniques vital to The Jungle Book’s box office success? Using digital marketing techniques allows for the younger audiences than the original would have. Evaluating a Frame

Image
Framing matches very well to the original video. The corner is almost central to the frame. One model is positioned above the others, to the right, similar to the original. Could have used a longer shot. The professional shoot has placed their models in the centre of the frame so that more focus can be put on them, so less is on their surroundings. Relied on ambient lighting. Different to original, a lot brighter. Not too harsh however. The professional shoot would have used their lighting in a more focused way, in which it highlights the models and darkens their surroundings. The use of the fairy lights above the models can give the illusion that the light is ambient. Models could have similar outfits, like in the original, as well as sunglasses. Could have a model standing over instead of sitting on the table. Could also push them closer together. The use of mirrors would also allow for a more matched sot to the original.  We used a hand held camera on pu...

Textual Analysis - H&M 'Bring It On'

Image
Camera The overall focus throughout the video is on the clothes and their fabrics, whether they are being worn or recycled. The camerawork uses a number of varied methods to help the audience focus on the clothes throughout. By using long shots to show a full outfit or a close us to emphasise the fabric or it tearing. The focus on the clothes tearing and being mangled can give off a rough feel; H&M manages to emphasise this through their use of a hand held camera. This constant unsteadiness allows for a less neat feel, which is what the ad tries to convey at the start with the damaging of clothes.  Sound  The ad consists of a number of diegetic and non-diegetic pieces of sound. The non diegetic sound features a soundtrack and a voiceover in the form of a narrative. The soundtrack is piece of music that builds in intensity throughout the ad by adding layers to the music until a climax. This allows the video to have an intense and empowering feel throughout, i...

Evaluation - Arctic Apparel Posters

Image
Overall, I believe the final posters followed the statement of intent well. I managed to keep a blue tint across the posters, which allows them to be related to the logo colour. However the sky on the day of the shoot was more overcast than I would’ve liked, which makes it difficult to see the W and A in ‘we’ and ‘are’ on the first poster. I managed to darken the sky without it looking too obvious so that the letters were more visible. The colours go together well and I managed to keep any other features such as the no entry sign and cars suited to the blue, orange and grey colour palette. I feel the clothes are suited to their environment and the fabrics are emphasised well. However the denim jacket in the second could be centred more so it is in full view for the audience. I feel the text conveys our selling points well and suits the feel of our brand. I was unsure about the colour of our logo, It would make sense to use our traditional blue, so the it can be related to the overall ...

Statement of Intent - Arctic Apparel

Image
Arctic Apparel is a high end winter clothing brand. The clothes range from parka coats to overcoats to casual jackets and other winter accessories The Brief  My company “Arctic apparel” will manage to create a marketing campaign that will emphasise our Fair-trade ideologies and our winter fashion selling points.  The Posters My products will be shown through two different posters that share similar features of mise-en-scene, so they can be related to ‘Arctic Apparel’. The posters will be shown in different locations, however with a similar background; This background being an industrial park. I plan on shooting in colour and maintaining a blue tint across the posters. This allows the posters to relate to our light blue logo. All the features in the poster will contribute to this overall blue look, from the sky to the clothes to cars In the background and street signs. Other features in the background such as the orange brickwork will compliment this blue and give an...

Fashion Advertising

Image
H&M Advertising H&M’s advertising is much more minimalistic than most fashion brands out there. They rarely shoot in a real world location, instead they keep to a single coloured set. Using a set like this allows more focus to be put on the clothes and the model, which is ultimately the key selling point. H&M will usually position their model in the centre of the image to draw all attention towards the model and reduce any distraction from the set. The shot below is an exception for a typical block coloured set H&M would use, in this they use a sheet material instead; however the way that the sheet creases are angled towards the model still draws attention to the her. Also because of the look of the clothes, the sheets can emphasise this flowing and loose look of the top. These features still put all focus onto the clothes in the typical H&M advertising style. H&M models are usually positioned in stylistic ways, different to usual stances in o...

Fairtrade marketing research

Image
Fairtrade have partnered with a number of products to help their marketing campaigns and sell their own products. Their products range from bananas and chocolate to beauty products and gold, plus many more. As well as selling their own products they distribute their logo onto other existing products and shops that contribute to their cause. Such as Cadbury’s, Waitrose, Ben and Jerry’s, Boots, AMT coffee and many more. When it comes to advertising, lots of products use Fairtrade similarly to advertise their product. Cadbury’s for example uses the Fairtrade logo on their chocolate bars; this is the simplest piece of marketing that they use. Cadbury launched an advertisement in 2012 that explained how they support Fairtrade. It explained how buying Cadbury’s dairy milk would support the Fairtrade cause and how it works exactly; they used this concept similarly to advertise their Cadburys drinking chocolate. Karma cola co. Karma cola co. is a fizzy dr...

Ownership Models Questions

1. What examples of ownership models, e.g. The Guardian’s trust ownership and The Daily Mail’s proprietor model could show the opportunities offered by the latter model for control by ‘press barons’. Ownership models like the Daily mail’s proprietor model offer a prime example of how media can be controlled to influence public political views. Press barons like Rupert Murdoch, who controls most UK tabloids, can be seen to share his political opinions in each of his newspapers; this allows for an unfair opinion to be shared with the UK.
